Four glorious points to start the season for Brunswick NOBSPC. Take that every day.
Early on it wasn’t looking so rosy as a hot north-westerly wind seemed to scramble the minds of our players as they continually played down the wrong side of Gillon Oval and turned the ball over in the corridor to deliver a lead to a youthful Whitefriars at quarter-time.
The second term was an exercise in more frustration as we dominated general play but went into the main break with a horrible 4.11 on the board.
Then the rain arrived and all of a sudden we started kicking straight – in fact 10.4 in the second half – go figure!
Truth is the change in conditions naturally encouraged us to play more directly – forgoing what had become a plague of ineffective short kicking – and our forwards were able to reap the rewards.
But that second half did contain a number of highlights! Topping the list was probably the exciting Dom Sullivan – the first Brunswick Junior FC graduate and wearing Sleepy’s famous No.4 – who kicked a couple of goals and could’ve had a handful.
The Christophers – Ford and Horsley – also snagged important majors in the third term as we made our move towards winning the game. Then there was the mercurial Glove who slotted one from the cricket nets!
Best over four quarters was easily defender Todd Cleary who brought his own ball. Key forward Matt Shannon and ruck Scott Thomas were also massive all day, with skipper Lachlan Ezard knocking up winning possessions in the guts. Lewis White, Matt Dickson and Danny King were also very good.
St Mary’s away will prove a much sterner test in a fortnight as we build into season 2017. Get behind the boys!
